Off the beaten path: Volpaia
One of the best thing with traveling the world is exploring the not so often visited sites and towns. This years secret travels brought me to the city of Volpaia.
A 10 minutes drive from Radda you find Volpaia. This little hamlet is as the many other tuscan city old and dates back to the 1100 BC.
The reason for finding this cute little hamlet was dinner at night. We tok a small day trip and booked it in person.
My parents have stumbled upon this place once before and wanted to try out the restaurant La Bottega. Great food, lovely view but a lot of mosquitos so do remember your repellant spray!
If you ever want to eat here, booking in advance is highly recommended even for small parties. We experiences people to get turned down upon arrival because it was full.
The hamlet Volpaia is not very big and it hardly have any traffic. A big parking space just below the restaurant La Bottega and then a short walk through town takes less than 10 minute. Consider a few more minute when photographing. The hamlet has one small church and a handful of buildings all beautiful decorated and restored to its former glory.
I did not check it, but you probably may even spend a night here in some rental apartment and maby even the small castle of Volpaia can offer some kind of sleeping arrangements. The Volpaia Castle has its own winery which includes a restaurant and a wine shop, and tours of some of wine cellars are possible. We stumbled upon a small group that had a small and private tour. It looked really nice and is probably quite educational considering the low number in contestants. Easier to ask questions when not so many people participant.
I loved the surroundings of this little hamlet. Very peaceful, due to no cars in the streets, and little tourist – I think we might have meet 5 people. The locations also gives great views over the tuscan landscape with mainly wine fields surrounding it.
