Bergen, weekendtrip in Unesco surroundings
I just returned from a wonderful weekend trip to Bergen. This coastal city surprised me and I fell in love with Norway´s second largest city.
Bergen is one of Scandinavia’s oldest city founded in the year of 1070. Well know for it´s connection as a Hansa city. All over the city you find references to it´s prime time as a trading city.
I have been here many times before but never for a full weekend and it has been years since my last visit. We went for a car ride early Friday and arrived in Bergen 4 1/2 hours later. Initially we intended to stay in a Airbnb apartment but since Mr. Grumpy had a hard time making up his mind on going or not we had to do the Hotel experience instead.
Saturday morning I took Bruno for a walk as the sun rises over the city. Hardly any people in the streets this early and the air is crisp and cold. Bergen is not usually well known for it´s pretty weather so I got really lucky with picking the right weekend.
We had a date with Mr. Grumpy´s sister and wanted to visit the top of Fløien. Saturday afternoon and great fall conditions with bright sun, calls for long lines at the funicular going up the mountain. We went for hiking instead. An hour later and I have arrived to the top, to be rewarded with this stunning view
A visit to Bergen would not be the same if you missed out on the wonderful Bryggen downtown harbour. This unesco world heritage site sizzling with history.
You can pretty much feel the history in the little wooden alleys and it makes me think of all the stories these buildings can tell. Look up at the buildings and you might even find a familiar city sign from the times of the Hansa. Many of Bergen old buildings have clear references to these times and I recognise many architectural styles from my recent trips to Germany. I would even say it gives Bergen it´s distinct style and feel. Anyways I really love it and yes I would name Bergen as Norways pretties city (even over my own Stavanger)
What a lovely weekend I just had. Really hope to be able to visit again soon to walk the streets up and down and get to know it even more.
