The Barony of Rosendal

 

Meet Norway´s single Barony. Established in 1678 by the Danish king.

Ms Karen Moway, then Norway’s wealthiest women married Mr. Ludwig Rosenkrantz (a broke Danish Baron) and was given this estate as a wedding gift. They built this small castle.

Someone ones told me that my ancestors on my mothers side runs all the way back to Karen Moway – guess that makes me some sort of Baroness?!

The estate is today a museum and is being run by Oslo University. It is mostly know for it´s beautiful rose garden.

The Barony has established a small glass house that houses a restaurant that serves lunch and dinner. If you should opt for a coffee and a cake this is to be enjoyed at the Barony Coffee house located in the basement of the castle.

I have spent many summers here, my close relatives lives only 3 norwegian miles away from Rosendal. And it is a must to visit this beautiful estate every time I come for a stay.

As a little girl I used to love to do the guided tours inside the house. And every spring/summer there is some plays and shows being put up for the public.

You will have to pay to get in these days. and as of 2013 it cost NKR 50,- for the entrance of the gardens.

You may even get to do a small hike in the surrounding nature and if you like there is the availability to sleep over at the farmhouse of the Barony just down the street.
