Pomorskie, exploring Gdansk and Sopot
When being asked to participate in a lifestyle and culinary trip to Pomorskie you´d be foolish not to go. I recently discovered Poland along with many of my fellow Norwegians. And on my first visit in Krakow earlier this year I was so positively surprised by both the country and it´s culinary. This time around I went on to explore the region in the North, Pomorskie.
It is pretty much the same impressions I have from this last trip as well. 3 days in the Pomorskie region and meeting such inspiring people. People who take pride and are so dedicated to what they do. Fresh and sustainable food, and very updated on allergies on all kind, so eating out in Poland should give you no problem at all.
First stop was the tri-cities of Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot. We got to explore both Gdansk and Sopot. Our very nice and central Hanza hotel, tells the story of the City of Gdansk as an old Hansa city. The city dates back to 900 AC and serves as the capitol of Pomorskie region.
We have a full and early start and visit the Theater of Shakespeare for a quick stop before lunch. The Theater has a long historie dating back many hundred years. The contrast against the old town is huge and this also raises a lot of discussions with the local.. you either love it or you dont! Me, I haven´t decided just yet.
As we head towards our lunch spot on foot we walk straight through old town and end up at the little but very cute Piwna 47, which is both the name of the restaurant and the streets it is located. We are lucky to have the entire 2 floor to ourselves and one dish after another of stunningly beautiful made local food are brought to us, along with perfectly picked wine that goes perfectly along with everything. We could not ask for a better start of the day.
5 courses later we are full, but get a fun lesson in cocktail making. These cocktails are the restaurants own twist of the well known bloody Mary and daiquiri. We got a tasting menu served for us not usually offered but if you are interested in having one for your self it is no problem of ordering one (and I suggest that you do, it was really tasty) call one day ahead and ask for one. This is a perfect way to explore what the restaurant can offer, smaller sizes but you still feel full and you get to taste different kinds of local food.
Absolutely full we stagger out happy. It is a perfect start to our day. Next we are going to discover Sopot by night. And we take the water way, sailing in to Europe’s longest wood pier. Dating back to 1827. Still in use and at the end where we park you have the marina.
Sopot in summertime explodes and is well known for its long beaches, spa´s and party life. We on the other hand are here a little to early in the season to see it in its full party glory but I don´t mind. Sopot in May is perfect for me. Not to crowed, it´s just how I like it.
We are heading for Bulaj Restaurant by the sea. Another 7 courses tasting dinner is prepared for us. And even though we are off season the restaurant keeps filling up. We sit there for hours as the sun sets and se people come and go. Even here they go for sustainability and are very proud of their cuisine. As they should be. The food is delicious and the last dessert at the end is combining surprisingly good combination off deer, chocolate and fudge Caramel. Outstanding!
I have never eaten so many good things in my life and definitely not this much in one day.. I am so full.. Good thing we are heading into Sopot´s night scene where we get to dance some of the calories off.
