Spring fever
When spring kicks in, you know you just have to make the most out of it. After all we are talking Norway and spring is always unstable this early never knowing when the rain comes pouring down again!
This weekend the sun came out and stayed there, even the temperature climbed enough to sit outside in the sun and soak. And trust me Saturday was dedicated to just that.. feel the rays of sun warm you up.
Sunday we spent hiking. Drove the car an hour north to the Island Mosterøy to walk the ground of Utstein Abbey and then take the hike to the fortress of Fjøløy. Closely you may also take the walk down to the lighthouse which we did not do this time.
Walking up to the fortress may take half an hour, The hike is easy and full of history. Dating back to 1941 when the Germans put the fortress up to secure the Norwegian coastline. The views are impeccable especially on a day like this, blue blue skies and hardly any wind. Though I can imagine how it would be standing there with a stunning view even in a stormy day.
The fortress was put down in 2009 and are no longer in use. There is a small house on the top that have been made into a small cabin and if you buy a membership in turistforeningen you could spend a night or two in this humble but fantastic place. I think that would be an interesting stay.
The abbey sits idyllically in a small bay protected from the worst weathers. This medieval abbey is Norway´s only preserved abbey of it´s kinda and full of history.
