The pink City, Marrakech – the city of color.
Marrakech is truly the 1001 nights in real life. It is called the pink (or sometimes red) city due to its color of the city walls.
Located at the north of the foothills of the amazing snowcapped Atlas mountains. The pink color is originated from the pigment of the local clay and new regulations claim that every new house or building must be given this pink color.
It seem to me that there is colour on every corner of this city. Bright and sunny colours which make you happy and want to put it down in a photography to remember later. This is some of the color I endured during our 2 days in Marrakech:
And not to be forgotten when speaking of colours. The Majorelle garden. Used to belong to the famous designer Yves Saint Laurent but was formed by the french artist Jacques Majorelle. The garden it selves is not very big but the colours are breathtaking. It even has its own colour – the Majorelle blue. Worth the trip while, but I recommend you do it in the afternoon as it gets hot during the day. It is even better for shooting photos as you won’t be getting the harsh lighting to worry about.
Marrakech for me will always be the city of magic. There is something about this city that takes me beyond the 1001 nights or reminds me of Aladdin and his magic lamp.
20 something years ago I was posted in Morocco as a tour guide and did weekly guided bus tours from Agadir into Marrakech. I remember those bus trips as they were yesterday. The ride through the mountains in the crips, cold early mornings. To arriving at the desert city and looking out into the pink walls of Marrakech. Pure magic. And then when shipping of my group to explore the magical souk on their own. That was the time for my own explorations. Mostly I just stayed at the square of Djeema el Fna. Had my coffee and listen to the hustling of the city. So different to home and so different to Agadir.
I know I will return some day because, Marrakech you got a hold on me!
This post is brought to you in collaboration with Sahara experience and VisitMorocco. All photos and text are as always my own.
