Taste of Latvia

I went to Latvia to explore the food of the Riga-Gauja region. This years European Gastronomic region did not disappoint. Rather, surprised me.

I am not really sure on what I expected upon going to Latvia on this Roadtrip in the Riga-Gauja region. But I really enjoyed this food trip. I have tasted the most lavish and stylish food down to the most plain and normal food. All equally good and tasteful. What strikes me most are the pride the Latvians take on their food culture. Even when it is most basic.

It all started in Riga. I meet up with some fellow Nordic travelbloggers and a couple of film makers. The food trip startet of at Entresol Restaurant. A three course meal was set for us by one of Latvias most awarded chefs, Raimonds Zommers. The restaurant, literally a stones throw away from our Hotel, was tastefully designed with light and delicate colours. The Menu: Latvian food with a touch of France.

Earlier this same day I made it to the big market halls and explored the old zeppelin hangards. This is where the inhabitants of Riga come for their fresh food. Fruit and meats.

Getting myself a snack before meeting up with the rest of the “crew” of #Latviaroadtrip. A small pavlova and a glass of bubbles can never go wrong!

Next day we slowly are getting on our way towards the Riga-Gauja region. Towards the countryside and our stay are at the magnificent Liepupe Manor. Afternoon tea in the gardens and lunch in the kitchen where we get to join in on the making of the pies. After some relaxing hours we are served a lavish alacarte dinner in the big dining hall.

Every other month the town of Gauje puts up Latvias most famous outdoor market. This is where farmers come to sell their products in season. We stopped for lunch here and I had a very good lentus salad with local goats cheese. Super delicious. I tried local ice-cream and some of the home made sweets.  Yummy. I love the fact that you can pick your own home made deliciousness.

The many various countryhouses we stayed at served us so many fresh and basic dishes of food. And still the most basic as a pancake were made so good to the eye with just a handfull of fresh berries. Always serving us what was in season and sustainable food of great quality.

Nothing tastes as good as an out door meal. I love it every time I get to dine in surroundings like these

Liepupe Manor had the cutest kitchen I ever visited during my #LatviaRoadtrip. And showed us how to make your own “pie”. In addition to this crash course in piemaking. I got to eat lunch here at this very table. Such a great experience. And how about these colours?

We ended our foodtrip with a bang at the Walmiermuiza brewery. Are you ever in the area you should visit their restaurant for a gastronomic experience beyond anything. The Chef Dzintars Kristovskis have been made the ambassador of the EGR anz I sertenly underatand why. One art piece after another keept rolling in. Again Latvian cuisine with seasonal products made modern and with a twist. I do get why he has been chosen to be the official ambassador for the food region. Simply outstanding.
